What's the difference between the two and what do they do because i'm confused. I was told Clients request data from the server and the Server holds all the data for other computers to use/access. Is this true?

Yes. It can be confusing due to the name. A web server holds the web pages and the client runs the browser and so here it is obvious. This is alos the case in a database server (say MySql server) and a client sending sql requests. This scenario covers the bulk of situations however It is not absolutely always like this.

In the case of an X-Server (The way 'nix machines display windows) however, the machine displaying the images for X-Window is the server and the machine doing the processing and sending the screen updates is the client. In most cases these are one and the same machine.

In the case of Access, the machine running access could run as a server to a remote client but usually client and server are the same machine.
