I think its quite funny how after coping with the Tesco Metro and little Sainsbury's on the triangle for a year, me and friends and I were incredibly excited when we went shopping in the Sainsbury's on Whiteladies Road for the first time. So much variety!! You can buy whatever you need. I don't think I've ever been so excited in a supermarket before!

If you're extortionately rich, then you can visit the organic supermarket, Fresh & Wild, near the Victoria Rooms. The imposing sign over the checkouts reads, "We satisfy and delight our customers." :p:

Some of the staff in Tesco Metro, Broadmead are really arrogant and rude. Try not to go there if you can.

Nearest normal Tesco is just off the M32. You should see it if you're travelling from the M1 and M32.

Where is the nearest 'proper' Tescos (ie not metro/express) to St Michael's Park/Tyndall Avenue? Actually, where is the nearest Express or Metro, even? I only saw one, on Whiteladies Road (I think that's the right street, just up from the Coach station?)

I went on the Open Day today and all I could find were Tesco Metro or Express. My store will transfer me when I go to uni, but I don't know how likely there is to be a vacancy in the Express stores.

I work in the tesco express in Clifton Village, we always need new staff, and take on a lot of students (mainly international, but i'm from Birmingham and got a job there pretty easily). I imagine they'd be happy to get transfer students, the same for the other expresses in the area; short staffed to the max!

Thanks for replying, this has put my mind at ease a bit. I always presumed that smaller stores would have all the staff they needed, but I guess not! I guess I'll just have to get used to the idea of working in a teenty shop, since currently I'm at a superstore!

You get pretty used to it, i used to work at my local Morrisons superstore at home and the transition was a bit wierd. Quite nice to do all the jobs in the shop in the express, rather than be confined to a department like in a bigger shop. Hope it goes well!

Tesco is in Broadmead if you're around the centre/Gloucester Road, Sainsbury's is just off the Clifton Triangle if you're up there, and Asda is in Bedminster which is just a really short bus ride away. Ummm there's also Somerfield on Gloucester Road, a teeny weeny co-op on Park Street and if you're willing to bus it to Cribbs Causeway then there is basically every supermarket you could possibly want, including a MASSIVE Asda and Morissons.

to summarise:

sainsbury's: triangle, whiteladies road (what's this rumour that big sains has closed down??)

co-op: triangle, college green, (there was a local plus store at centre, which is the same company as co-op, but it is closed coz lightning stuck.... )

spar: park street and somewhere else

asda: bedminster, cribbs causeway

tesco metro: near bus station, 2 @ broadmead, clifton village

big tescos: near M32 (that's the nearest one i can think of)

sommerfield: top of st. michael's hill

waitrose: stoke bishop, in the opp direction of parry's lane at white tree roundabout

union shop: students union, hiatt baker hall

there was something else in clifton village that i cannot recall.

p/s: for chinese supermarkets, there's one at st. thomas st east (near temple meads), and another at glos road.

Sainsburys: One big one on Whiteladies Road, about 20 minutes walk from Stoke Bishop and 10 minutes walk from uni. One smaller one on the Clifton Triangle, and 5 minutes walk from uni.

Tescos: One small Tesco express on Whiteladies Road, about 15 minutes walk from uni. Another small Tesco express further away, about 5 minutes from the hospital. One larger Tesco metro in Broadmead (city centre) and one huge one by Ikea (just off the M32).

Somerfield: One on St Michael's Hill, about 30 seconds from uni. Crappy, but people still use it because so many students live so close. The nearest supermarket to the Kingsdown estate, where many students live. Another one in Clifton Village.

Asda: Big one at Cribbs Causeway. Need a friend with a car as it's a 15 minute drive, otherwise a 40 minute bus journey.

Morrisons: Again, a big one at Cribbs.

M&S: One in Broadmead (city centre) with quite a big food department.

Waitrose: Apparently one somewhere near Stoke Bishop, although I never discovered it.

If you live in Durdham or University Hall, you'll probably do your shopping at Clifton Down Sainsbury's (the big one on Whiteladies Road) unless you or a friend of yours has a car. I used to go most days on my way back from lectures so there was never too much to carry up the hill, or if I bought lots at once, I'd get the bus back to Stoke Bishop. This is the best supermarket to use unless you're going to go outside the city centre, and I don't think it's significantly closer to the Clifton halls than it is to Stoke Bishop. It takes 20 minutes to walk from there to Stoke Bishop, and maybe 10, probably 15 minutes to walk from there to the Clifton halls.

I think enough people have done those lists for the OP to be satisfied now...

I was just thinking that....
