Obviously due to recent events, lots of people must have been dissuaded.

I read somewhere that there were speculations that applicant numbers will by down by up to a third this year. But that was a few months ago now and it seems as though the BMA and Hunt have come to some sort of better agreement at the moment.

It's hard to say how numbers will be effected until afterwards. But it has likely dissuaded people away from medicine who only seek to pursue it for its pay packet.

Taken from UCAS website regarding the 2016 cycle:
There are 20,100 applicants to medicine courses, a similar number to last year. There are 14,820 medicine applicants from the UK, 3% fewer than last year as a result of an 18% fall in those reapplying. New UK applicants applying to medicine have increased by 2% to 12,150.

Is that for courses starting in 2016? Surely they can't have those figures for 2016 applications as they have not yet closed.

The UCAS deadline was October, well pre-strike and to be honest pre-much public knowledge of the dispute.

So the people currently applying probably weren't even aware. I don't think the numbers will really mean much re: the political situation.

It's the numbers in coming years and for actual current doctors and whether they continue in the nightmarish treadmill of NHS 'training' that might be more telling.
