    I think I understand the 'rank 2' part but I was wondering what a transverse tensor is, in the context of also being rank 2.

    Rank 2 denotes that the tensor is an NxN matrix.

    A tensor associated with a wavevector k can be written as the sum of the transverse and longitudinal components where the transverse component is orthogonal to k
