    what does it mean for a meristem to be mitotically active?

    It will continuously grow, for example a human will grow to a certain size characterised by their genes however since the meristems can keep growing. If a branch is taken off the species then it can grow a new one since the cells are dividing mitotically so can replace the lost branch
