Often ships are given by combining the names of the two parties within the relationship, but not in all circumstances.

It can also mean relationships you wish were true, which occupies about 80.99% of my endorsements, if I'm being completely honest. 600 was a bit of an exaggeration, but there are at least 50 in books, dramas, films, in real life, etc.
