That's not surprising. The elite American universities charge exorbitant fees (kind of like British public schools), but Oxbridge don't (at least not yet).

well known fact. Well it is within the uni. There's a system in place where the richer colleges help subsidise the poorer ones, without which Oxford and probably Cambs would be considerably smaller!

That isn't suprising, everyone around Oxford knows a lot of colleges are in the red and that there is a big difference between the richest colleges and the poorest.

What's strange is how a college like Pembroke (Ox) can be so poor on the face of it, but its boat club and JCR are both pretty loaded. (So my friend tells me anyway)

That because all of Pembroke's finances goes to the Boat Club, it's pretty much the only thing they have to shout about. And they have university rower, which brings in more sponsorship from external sponsors.

As a college it's pretty poor though, especially considering the amount of students they have.

I always thought Pembroke would be loaded, what with the cash for places scandal

The "not being loaded" is, I'm guessing, what drove them in that direction...

That's the story I've heard. College which are strong financially can select candidates on academic merits; poor old PemBROKE couldn't do that.

Hey, I think you twisted my words a bit!
I think its inevitable that american level fees will be introduced, its the only way to maintain the desired quality in the unviersities.

Not really, because I've been told this by other people too; so I'm not really referring to your words at all. Merely agreeing with the assumption.

And I'll be in deepest, darkest Cambridge, as won't really care. And they're all allegations anyway, with little to no evidence too suggest they're true.

Like the allegations that St John's isn't in fact the friendliest college in Cambridge. Scandalous!
