Thanks for that. Wasn't making up btw, got my numbers from a student guide. However, access isn't purely about percentage of men/women - aparrently the ethos in some of the colleges is still masculine and off-putting. I was speaking to a Corpus girl today who told me that when she first went to visit it she felt hugely over powered. Also, the distribution is an issue - some colleges have comparativly few women whilst others are favoured by them. Perhaps being a member of one college makes it hard to see the bigger picture.
    Corpus girl!?! What's her name?
O and the ratio at corpus is bout 2 to 1...

Riannan - you won't know her, she starts this term. As I said, it was her first impression, which can be all important. I remember when I was choosing my college I couldn't help but be put off one or two of the colleges because of the dominant male ethos I was presented with.

The numbers of women at Cambridge are propped up by the presence of three single sex colleges. At some of the mixed colleges less then a third of the students are female, an appalling statistic (from the alternative prospectus if anyone is interested). Of course, the ethos must take partial responsibility for this.
I'm also not entirely sure, with regards to Jamies earlier post, that there is much demand for all male colleges. At Oxford, we have several PPHs which provide an all male option within the university. Having spoken to an admissions tutor, apparently there is very little demand for men only environments, less so then the all women colleges. Some certainly, but it seems not enough to justify the presence of an all male college as it stands. That said, at Cambridge Peterhouse, Trinity and Christs all have so few women that it would be the next thing to a mens college anyway!
im going to peterhouse and im a girl (last time i looked)

wasnt there an all male college in oxford that was the last to become mixed cos it was losing money cos noone was applying there? might be wrong. but point is, all colleges used to be male, now none are, ergo demand for all male colleges diminished as the option of mixed colleges became available. whereas the all women colleges are relatively new and still getting filled and places like newnham r actually getting more applicants these days (or am i wrong?) ergo theres demand for all womens.

dont know why that would be....

You still havent answered Lalas point about the number of men getting thirds also being higher.
Re the hildabeasts: You may well be right about the average IQ of pooled candidates being just as high as first selected. However, if the interview process is worth anything at all then it should at least be able to select out the truly exceptional from the merely very very good!! These candidates are very unlikely to end up in the pool, and they are the very ones most likely to get a first!
Finally if you read the report on inequalities in Oxford colleges (link from an earlier post) you would see that there is a very strong correlation between wealth and position in norrington table. I think this is likely to be a far more significant factor in St Hildas relatively poor performance than is the lack of men.

all womens colleges are old. Mixed ones are a newer concept - girton was the first college to become mixed, having been an all female college before. I think it must have been made in the days when strict segregation was required - hence why its so far outta town u need a passport

My dad was one of the first male fellows at Girton. It is annoyingly far away from everything, though.

No he hasnt! But then I am not surprised by that.
Apologies, other matters required my attention. I don't have access to the detailed breakdown of grades. It was in varsity (or tcs can't remember which) a few months back so I'll check it in the back issues.

Have to say Lala, you have a very negative attitude - almost bordering grudge against me. Are you an old nemesis from s-cool perchance?

    Jamie

Haz - that was for the school slack only. Was quite inspired tho...Other classic ones have been droog from clockwork orange (fake eyelashes take yonks) porn devil, playboy, and a horse.
I'll be easily recognised cos i think i have to do the bbq this year. (im sure its gonna be a sports day with us up near leckerhampton)
    all good fun

What is s-cool? Do you mean school or is it something different? I dont think I went to your school anyway.
You began the negative attitude, when I pointed out that you were talking crap and you took exception to it and decided to do the bad rep thing (though your post count is too low to make any difference anyway) to the people that got the better of you in the discussion. I merely reciprocated. Its like I said- if you dont want your ideas argued with, you'd be better off not posting them. You say something dumbassed, you're going to get a few replies. You say anything, you're going to get a few replies, really.
The less said about the paedophile at the gates and the porn devil, the better.

S-cool is a school help site with once very active discussion boards. A lot of members here were once part of the s-cool faithful (including myself for a time). And then one day S-cool got crap. No one knows why. One of life's mysteries.
