Mobile data usage going through the roof for no reason

First of all I have a HTC One M8s on contract with Vodafone. The contract includes 1GB of data a month, I am focusing on data only so I will not talk about calls and texts. I have this low data plan because I don't use much data as one usually would. For the last few months it's been going smoothly and whenever I checked the rate at which I was using my mobile data from both the Vodafone app and my mobile data usage checker, the numbers looked appropriate and everything appeared to be normal which it was. However this month I check my data usage and it's much higher than normal. The graph of my data usage shows very steep spikes from one number to the other. I can't explain it properly but I checked my testing out the rate at which my data was being used. It turned Wi-Fi off and mobile data on, I went on YouTube and clicked on a random video and watched about 10-15 seconds before exitting YouTube and immediately turning data off. My mobile data usage increased by 14MB according to my mobile data usage checker. I'm sure it's not faulty I have been using it before and it is pretty accurate compared to the Vodafone app. I can't really rely on the Vodafone app at the moment because I click refresh so that after using the data I can see what the new shown data is but it still e.g. "...MB of data used as of 8:40pm" when it is now e.g. 8:45 let's say. So does anyone know what it could be, or if this is normal?

If you're watching a video it's likely to use up a lot of your data. Some applications use up your data a lot so it depends on how you're using your data. Maybe the last couple of days you've been using it differently?

I don't think there would be any other reason why it's being used up so quick.
