A Dutch woman who told Qatari police she had been drugged and raped in March has been in government detention ever since on unclear charges, a lawyer has claimed.
The Dutch Embassy in Qatar confirmed the woman remained held ahead of a scheduled hearing Monday in Doha, which will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The case highlights the clash between the Islamic-based legal codes governing Qatar and other Gulf nations as they try to draw in tourists expecting the protection of Western-style laws.
The 22-year-old woman, on a vacation with a friend, went out for drinks at a hotel bar in the Qatari capital on March 15, lawyer Brian Lokollo said.
While there, she believes someone 'messed with her drink' and her memory became hazy. She later awoke alone, her clothes torn and the victim of a rape, Mr Lokollo said.
She was immediately detained after reporting the attack and has appeared three times in court and thinks she may face an adultery charge for having sex out of wedlock.
The man she reported as her assailant has also been detained, Mr Lokollo added.
Initially, her family and her employer wanted to keep the case quiet and try to work it out locally, but decided to go public this weekend with Dutch media.
A social media campaign has been launched to call for her release.

Backwards country with backwards rules. I feel sorry for her.
Still, you go to another country, you're subject to their laws. At the end of the day, she should've known better to go to a theocratic **** hole.Last edited by Zargabaath; 12-06-2016 at 12:25.

If this is true, it is completely disgusting. I can't believe that such a wealthy, educated, intelligent country would still believe in such a disturbing ideology.

That's just ****ed up. She was raped, she didn't just decide to have sex and tell the police. What the hell is wrong with the Qatari police.
These gulf countries need to sort themselves out. (Mainly Qatar)

Blimey, why the heck would the World Cup Commission (or whoever) decide that 2020 should be there?

Glad to see the Muslim world getting more civilised every day.
