do they have them at university?
In america in older universities yes - here in the UK we tend to have clubs and societies based around things a bit more substantial than vagina ownership

As far as I'm aware 'sorority' comes from the Latin meaning 'sisterhood'. (I'm probably wrong) They are women's clubs or organizations in colleges primarily designed to facilitate social integration. (Like our freshers' weeks)

They have names consisting of Greek letters (as you've probably noticed. I am adept at stating the bleedin' obvious!)

If I were an American student, I think I'd prefer to join one of those co-ed fraternities someone mentioned as (*****iness coming up) too many women get on my nerves. And most of my friends now and college were and are male (purely platonic, of course).

They all respected me 'cause I could outdrink most of them!

I guess our 'societies' and SUs (students' unions) are the closest we have to those groups in the UK.

Additionally, it's supposed to help you with networking for the rest of your life - so if you want that job you can rely on one of your sorority sisters to get it for you.

A good description of sorority life can be read in a newly published book called "Pledged" by Alexandra Robbins.

Reese Witherspoon's character lived in one in the first few scenes of "Legally Blonde," but not during her time at Harvard. She was at law school; sororities tend to restrict memberships to undergrads.

We do actually have fraternities over here, however they're not in excess, its only a couple, and they're nothing like their American counterparts where to get in you have to go through 'hazing' and all that. Nottingham Trent has set up a chapter of Phi Alpha Delta - a fraternity specialising in Law (might've been the one on legally blonde). I've also heard there's a fraternity at manchester
