Anyone else see him get a lifetime achievement award at the Parliamentary Awards just now? Absolutely brilliant clip of him accusing Thatcher of "hiding behind cynical deceptions", and being "a liar, deceiver, conceiver and a crook". Speaker of course demands he withdraws the comments, Dalyell replies "I stick by it, do what you have to do", and the Speaker indeed orders him out of the house.

When receiving the award, despite being a Labour MP, he pointed out that he felt that if Blair had had to deal with anything like the democratic scrutiny of Harold Wilson, "we would not be in the present mess we are in in Iraq". That is an interesting comment, for two reasons: firstly, the fact that the PM has more power now in the past, and how undesirable that is; secondly, the comparison with Wilson, PM during Vietnam, when Britain had just as much reason to support the Americans and held back from doing so.
