Should I ask for an extra piece of paper before the exam starts and do my plan on that? or just do it in a small space above my actual essay? Never really thought about it... didn't do any planning last year.

Do it where you're going to write your answer, then write your answer after it. If you run out of space in your booklet after writing a big plan, you can ask for more paper then.

You can ask for more paper before if you really want to, but you should always write your plan before your answer so it's easier to refer back to. Also examiner reports always say that the best students write plans beforehand, so there's the potential that even just seeing a plan may make your examiner more likely to judge your answer more positively as it shows you've thought about it.
