I don't think it will cause a major surprise to most Brexiters that Boris has been rather opportunist over this issue.

But there have been other Brexiters who have been campaigning for this for years, Liam Fox, David Davis, IDS, etc.

Boris is trying to hijack the issue to promote his own chances of being Prime Minister but I think he's come across badly in this debate and reduced his credibility with the public.

    I know right

Look at what George Osborne was saying at the time: Conservatives will be spending the same as Labour.

Osborne pretended later that he'd been some kind of opponent of government spending and Labour ruined the economy by spending too much, but when he was in Opposition he was pledging to match Labour pound for pound.

Some of these politicians don't have specific positions, they choose their position based on what they think is expedient to say.

But can we also consider that politcal climates both in the UK and the EU have changed, and it's allowed for people to change their stances on things? If politicians never changed their views (even under pressure from the public) we'd probably be saddled with a lot of unsavoury laws that got shouted down.

This isn't exactly relevant though, is it?
He's not trying to insist the government don't want Turkey to join.

8 years ago Turkey was looking promising that it might be making progress in cleaning up it's act. Turkey has just gone totally downhill in the past year.... People can change their mind.

    There are also opportunistic Remainers.
