Is it possible to demonstrate "working knowledge" of certain areas of work without having any experience in it, on a job application?

You'd have to be more specific, what is the 'thing' they want you to show experience of?

If it's something like software you've never used, then that's tricky.

If it's some sort of action like serving customers in a bank, then if you have experience serving customers in another context, draw on that.

Finally, you can resort to the hypothetical. Without saying 'I have no actual experience of this', just say what you would do in that situation.

It's a specific piece of health and safety legislation.

If you've never worked with it, then miss out the question. If you can't do that, read the legislation and write something hypothetical. If you can't do that, write about some comparable legislation you have worked with. If you can't do any of that, it's probably not the job for you.
