    Hi all,

I've been searching for a job for months, but I've also been trying to gain work experience as I will be applying this year to study a PGCE. Having sent off lots of work experience requests I have now managed to get three weeks of experience lined up in two schools (from 20th June-8th July).

I also had an interview for a job last week, and they offered me the position yesterday. However, as it's a temp job they want me to start immediately - they did ask me at the interview whether I had booked any holidays but I stammered a bit and just said no as I didn't quite know what to say.

I am wondering whether it is worth trying to reschedule the work experience for September; the major problems with this would be that there is no guarantee I'll be able to get this...I have struggled to get it for this month, and this would be leaving it a bit late. I do feel my work experience is more important as it's my future career but at the same time I do need money!

Should I tell work that some family problems have arisen and that I can now only start in three weeks, or try and rearrange my work experience? It is likely that work will then find someone else, but then if I try to rearrange my work experience I may end up shooting myself in the foot.

    Advice please, thanks

Make enquiries of both and see how flexible they are. Just tell them two things have come up on the same day. I expect the job are going to be less flexible as they need someone now, whereas the school are just doing you a favour. If yiy speak to job people say soemthing gas come up subsequent to when you were interviewed. Sort it out quickly.

Take the paid job because any paid work is hard to find but be honest with the school and ask their advice of what they think is best, making money or training for a future career ? but the school work experience is very short so maybe you can do work experience there on any days off you have because if the paid job is part time like 3 days a week you can arrange to still do work experience in the school's 2 days a week or more if you ask to work Saturday's and Sunday's for the paid job
If you choose the school when it finishes you can just go to a walk in agency on the local high street and let them find jobs for you, its easier that way or any speciwlist agency that can get you a paid job in a school or the career you really want

To be honest I don't see why it would be an issue for the school to reschedule for September. If anything it will be better experience for you as things are winding down for the summer atm. Unless they have something else on I doubt that having you in shadowing for a week in September will be an issue, I would just explain the situation and ask, you could even be honest and explain you have been offered paid work which you really need but you aren't prepared to lose this experience as you are very excited about it so would it be possible to do in September?

Thanks for all the advice. It was a full time permanent post for 6-8 weeks, and so they have been unable to budge on the start date. I've decided to go with the work experience instead of the job... reasons being that I have a busy enough September already, and seeing as I need four weeks of experience altogether (as not sure if I want to do primary or secondary yet) I won't have enough time to fit it in then. I potentially have a part time job lined up now though, fingers crossed
