Is it worth trying to contact a university to ask maybe if you could sit and attend a lecture of one of your desired courses, to help understand what it is actually about...
Also, would it look good on a UCAS form?

Yes I would say its worth it. If you don't succeed nothing happens, if you do then you get the opportunity and its only for a short time. I would say it would look good on a personal statement to show your interest in the course (large amount should be put for this) but don't write loads since its one visit.

I personally went to a lecture held at ICE building on a humanitarian group where some people at university were also attending and I put that in my statement.

May I ask how you set this up/contacted the university?

I would probably just go onto the university website and email one of the lecturers for your planned course.
