braces and operation

i currently have had braces on my teeth from last november and when i had them put on was informed i'd be having an operation after around a year to move my lower jaw back because it's quite prominent.

just wondering if any one else has had this done and how long it was after initially having the braces on did you have the operation, after what time were you able to eat again, if there were any side effects, and how long before the braces were completely removed?

or if any one has had a similar treatment with an operation as well?

i'm quit concerned as it looks as though the operation will be around november/december so i may miss university interviews, and also may be unable to eat at christmas!! did anyone have this problem??

i know there's nothing i can do about it, and the sooner i get it done the sooner it'll all be over.. braces are very unattractive!

also, the surgical consultant i have is very rude and inconsiderate, whenever she examines my mouth it's like she makes a point of hurting me! and i've never even spoken to her so i dunno what her problem is! my regular orthodontist at the hospital is really nice but whenever she's brought in she's really rude to me. i just wanna tell her to be a bit more considerate.. but it's a bit hard when you have someone's hand i your mouth.

any suggestions/advice/sympathy would be great

thanks

Aww braces aren't unattractive...I loved my braces when I had them on  just think how beautiful your teeth are going to be when they are off.

I couldn't eat at Christmas this once as I'd just had my wires changed on my bottom ones and just had my top ones fitted...pain!!! But it did help with my diet

Just think of all the positives!

Also, orthodontists do hurt you..the one that is hurting you well maybe thats her only method of doing her job?!?!? But if it is really extreme then just say OWWWWWWW when she hurts you lmao!

Good luck

hey, i had the operation 3 weeks ago today - i had braces on for 3 years before i had my op, but that was incase i had a late growth spurt which would have meant having the surgery again!
heres a recent thread: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8953943#post8953943

and if you go to yahoo groups and type in 'Orthognathic Surgery Support' - thats a really useful resource full of pic's and messages from people who've already had surgery/going to have it.

you'll be on a liquid diet for about 2 weeks and then you can have soft stuff like mashed potato, soft bread and well cooked pasta, rice. thats the stage im at, and then supposedly after 5-6 weeks you can eat normally.

hmm not sure about what you should do about uni interviews though as i never had any. i was told i should take a gap year in case my surgery was that year and so i could go to the frequent appointments, but my surgery was 2 years after that anyway!

oooo! I had this done about 10months ago. And TRUST me, it's SO worth it, yes there is pain and your face will swell majorly for a week and a bit for a month+ but the end result is so good, I've noticed alot more male attention since all the treatment finished.
I had my brace on a year before the operation and 8months after.
Personally, I'm a greedy bitch so I had the operation on tues, couldn't swallow properly until friday, and then was just eating soup, yoghurt until the next week and I was eating pasta by the tuesday! And chips on the weds and pizza hut on the friday. Fight the pain!
Stock up on painkillers - I was taking them daily for about 3-4months after.
Anything else you wanna know don't hesitate to ask me

You were told that you were having this operation? I was offered the same operation around three years ago, my dentist only told me about it because it was part of his job, he said that he never advises people to go through the operation. I'm not sure why that is, but every case is obviously individual.

I was in the same position as you, but when i first got reffered to be treated, they offered me the operation first so that when my jaw was moved, my teeth would move to suit the place of my "new" jaw.

I had my top braces on for around three years, bottom brace for about a year and a half. My top brace was put on first, and sat about doing nothing for months while my bottom teeth caught up. I think that's why it took so long before my braces got taken off, but it was well worth it. Everyone is different when it comes to braces, it just depends what your teeth were like before you started, and I had very straight teeth anyway.

You're right, the sooner you do it the sooner your braces should come off. It's difficult at that time of year, you have my sympathy with that one. You might be okay depending on when you have your actual operation, you're never going to know until it happens i'm afraid. Is there no way of doing it sooner, or maybe that little bit later? It's something that you could possibly bring up with your dentist.

Don't worry about your braces, I don't think they are unattractive, I loved mine, but I have to say, I love not having them that little bit more :p:

no i meant i was told that it should be around this christmas. i was told about the operation about 4 years ago and then chose to have it after years of appointments which were pretty much all the same
"so you can either do nothing.. just straighten the teeth.. or have the operation for the jaw as well, have a think and we'll se you in 6 months"
"okay so there's 3 options.. do nothing.. have a brace.. or have a brace and operation.. have a think and we'll se you next year"
etc etc

thanks for your advice though, really makes me feel better about having it done. i've got an appt. next month so i'll ask what the timeframe s for getting the op done and whether it can be moved around at all... i love christmas food way too much!

thanks everyone for all your advice etc, nice to know not everyone is born with a perfect jaw!

Is it an osteotomy you're having? My brother had it done and it was horrible, he had his jaw wired up for 6 weeks so all he could have was drinks and protein shakes through a straw :P Also it's a very serious operation, you have to go in the high dependency unit after you come out of theatre and it's really not good if you're sick (as people often are when they've come round from the anaesthetic) because they have to snap your wires open asap so you don't choke on your vomit :O Sorry, I'm not trying to scare you or anything lol, but basically from what I saw it's a horrible experience, and if it isn't absolutely necessary I wouldn't go for it. Is your jaw really all that noticeable? Often things that we notice because we see them every day in the mirror and focus on them, other people don't really see at all. If you're not massively bothered about your jaw, you could just leave it and just have a brace? I'm sure it's not that bad! Good luck if you do go through with the op though
urgh i had this operation done two weeks ago and now i cant eat. Liquids only...ive already lost half a stone
