Nah he's messing with you, it's Kings college london.

Cambridge isn't it?. KCL, lol. Apparently MIT has a good Maths course according to a few friends but I would say Cambridge.

so definitly cambridge over oxford for maths right?

Reply 6

Cambridge over Oxford for maths is certain.
For the US, Princeton can be counted as best for Maths.

Reply 7

Yeah I suppose but don't think oxford is bad for maths. All these unis have reputation and you don't really know about how good they are.

Twenty quid says you really wanted to know the "best uni in the uk for maths" but got lost on your way to the 't' key and ended up typing a completely different sentence.

no, i really mean the world lol. id rather move abroad, just want to get to the best uni possible and set it as a target. i like to set my targets high. that way you have a chance of succeeding. worked in the past.

lol, just wanted to know which side of oxbridge cause i hear you can only apply to one. on that front cambridge it is :P

atm its sounding like i should apply to princeton and mit too. any other us and canada unis worth considering?

Reply 12

yale maybe (i don't know which of the US ones but the main 4 in the US are yale, harvard, MIT and princeton). . .
some in Oz and NZ are actaully good - can't remember which though

Reply 13

Remember to apply to an easier-to-get-into uni as a backup as well.

Is it not a french university that is the best for maths in the world? I can't remember its name but I'm sure I remember someone telling me about it.

i doubt you'll leave the country. i used to think like you, but you grow out of it. foreign study is a hassle, is expensive, and often of a different style. cambridge admission is a big challenge in itself, and the 'legendary' Part III of the mathematical tripos attracts the best young mathematicians from all over the world. are you even that good at maths?

Reply 16

Interesting question. I would say Cambridge has the best rep, particularly for part III.

Interestingly in the IMO the UK normally finishes pretty mid-table. So there are obviously lots of genius mathmos not at Cambridge (I think Romania are particularly strong as a smallish country). But obviously use of IMO as an indicator is dodgy (and other countries may focus more time on prep than us).

I think a few years back the whole USA team got perfect scores at IMO.

École Normale Supérieure, peut-ètre? It's supposedly quite good.

I think you meant Hungary.

I would say the best places in the world to study maths is the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris.
