how does allicin in garlic kill bacteria?

I'm not sure that anyone really knows. Given that most antibiotics harm either the formation of the cell walls of bacteria or their protein synthesis, and that allicin also kills fungi (which have a cell wall consisting of mostly chitin rather than murein), my best bet would be that allicin somehow interrupts with protein synthesis.
