I read somewhere that it's to do with the short term memory of the brain shutting down, which makes us unable to create any memories during that span of falling asleep.

Intersting.... I wonder why it seems to choose to shut down at different times every night? Like sometimes I go to sleep pretty quic kand other times I'm just laying for there a while, which is quite annoying.

Could it possibly be due to the volume of certain biochemicals present?
E.g. something exciting happened which caused an increase of a specific hormone in your brain. This hormone could be the potential cause of decrease in ability to fall asleep.

Just a guess. Not necessarily the right answer.

The brain does several checks to see if you've fallen asleep.

Which is why you toss and turn, itch, move about before sleeping.

Every time you react and move, you tell your brain you're awake and it keeps you up
