    Help, I can't find the answer anywhere in my notes and I can guarentee if I don't learn it it will come up in the exam and ill cry hahah!

    Why should HCL not be used to acidify KMnO4 solutions?

    Must be something to do with colour/colour change when hcl is added i reckon

    Solutions are in water, which has hydrogen. Adding hydrochloric acid adds hydrogen so it doesn't work

    isn't it just that MnCl2 is formed? Or at the very least Manganate reacts with Cl-

    apparently its because the MnO4- is a very strong oxidising agent which oxidises HCL to form CL2 gas which is poisonous.
