Faraday's law states that the emf induced in a conductor is equal to the rate of magnetic flux linkage, whereas Lenz's law states that the direction of an induced current in a conductor will be opposite to the change that caused it. AC is used so that the magnetic field of the transformer constantly reverses its direction, generating a large change in magnetic flux linkage and therefore producing a high emf.
