Oriental Studies

Hi All,

Don't know if my question is a bit specialised (as the subject is, I think, a comparatively small one), but does anyone know which is supposed to be better for oriental studies - Oxford or Cambridge? What is the general rep of this subject area? any info would be gratefully appreciated.

thanks
did you know, the character of James Bond is supposed to have done O.S. at Oxford!! i say go with the Bond and go oxford! they like you to have languages at A level and prepare for some hardcore ques in the interview about why u want to do it, what u want to do after etc.

Which area are you interested in?

You can't go wrong with Oxford or Cambridge, but you might also want to take a look at SOAS.

SOAS over both.

A lot of academics have recently warned me not to go to SOAS.

After applying to both Oxford and Cambridge I got offers from both (St John's at Cambridge and St Antony's at Oxford). I personally chose Cambridge because they were a lot more supportive in the process of applying for funding. Also, I will be doing History (even though related to Oriental Studies) rather than pure Oriental Studies - and in terms of History generally I think Cambridge is just a tiny little bit better than Oxford.

I guess it depends on the exact subject you want to research - Oxford (and especially St Antony's) indeed seems to be excellent for Oriental Studies - and on whether you want to have a specific supervisor (I met my prospective supervisor at Cambridge - Richard Evans - before I applied, which was quite useful for me).

Nicky's bet: postgrad. Mentioned funding  (No you're not missing something, prospective undergrads can't apply to both unless they're after an organ scholarship.)
SOAS is supposed to have alot of a druga prob but im guessing a better chance of getting in than oxbridge

And St Antony's is a graduate college.

I think being competent in a completely different language, and having a good knowledge of the culture, would be rather impressive, whatever career path you followed.
