Cocaine was the first effective local anaesthetic to be used in minor surgery, unfortunately it can overstimulate a patient, cause nausea and be dangerously addictive. Modern local anaesthetics have to avoid these problems. One family of these are synthetic derivatives of 4-aminobenzoic acid, the simplest of which is benzocaine which is often the active ingredient in ointments to relieve the pain caused by sunburn.
Design a synthesis of benzocaine starting from 4-nitrobenzoic acid, giving the reagents and essential conditions for each stage and the name and structural formula for each intermediate.
