Everyone is saying they don't matter. So they matter or not? Because now I'm thinking they don't really.

Yes they do. If you want to go to college, you have to have at least 5 GCSEs A*-C to get onto 3 A levels. That opens doors to university for you once you get the grades you need to get onto your degree course. If you wouldn't have GCSEs, you would not have the ability to go to college or university. There are even some apprenticeships out there that will require some GCSEs and some will even ask for A levels or a BTEC qualification in a certain subject.

Nowadays most jobs also require at least a C in Maths and English language( basics. Everyone should get at least a C in those anyway). Some opportunities close if you don't have such grades for these subjects.
Your GCSEs are your very first qualifications that potentials employers base their decision on. Of course other factors have to be considered as well but qualifications that you gained in education do put you in a better position than someone who doesn't have any qualifications

For some courses/unis they don't matter, all you need to worry about I maths and English. However obviously if you want to apply for a competitive course at a top uni then they matter. In light of the new linear a levels they matter even more now.
