Hell, why not jump on the bandwagon - oh and for the record, I'm from nearish to Shrewsbury; the correct pronunciation is (I think) Shrowsbree, but even round here there are loads of people who say Shroosbree.

Capitals indicate stress when it's not obvious.

Grass: Grarss

London: Lundon

Atherton: ATH-err-ton

Shrewsbury: See above
Leominster: Lemster - this is correct.

Newcastle: Newcassle

I'm from Shropshire, but not actually Shrewsbury!

Because we speak properly. :p: I actually say it with a short a, though I'm not entirely sure why, as I say carstle, but there it is.

Oh, on the subject of Marquess - can also be spelled Marquis, and I believe should be pronounced Mar-cwis (not that I've ever met one or had to say it!). The female version is actually Marchioness. Random fact for the day!

Very true. I worked for the Marquis of Bath for a while and all the stupid tourists seemed to think it was pronounced "marquee"
