# what is the conjugate of 26/4+squarerootof3? watch

1. what is the conjugate of 26/4+squarerootof3?

the question is 'Express 26/4+sqaureroot3 in the form a + b sqaureroot3, where a and b are integers.

the first step is to multiply the numerator and the denominator by the conjugate. what is that? and is that what you do with questions that start with 'express'?
thank you

I'm not 100% sure if conjugate is the right word to use - maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

When you have something of the form , you multiply it by '1', but expressed as a fraction like so:

. Notice how you are indeed multiplying by 1 so it is okay to do this. The 'conjugate' is where you take the term on the denominator, swap the + in front of the square root for a -. Eg the 'conjugate' of 2 + root5 is 2 - root5, and the same can be done for negative roots. The conjugate of 3 - root2 is 3 +root2.
