Do you need to do work outside class to gain a good grade in BTEC level 3 or is the time in class enough?

I did a Certificate in BTEC Level 3 Applied Law this year.

I did no extra work. The class time alone was enough to secure a Distinction.

I'm doing Level 3 Engineering and did 90% of the work in college.
    Got a Distinction* (D*)
I'll be lucky to get a pass this year!
