Hello guys!

I just heard that I have gotten through to the Assessment Centre on April 18th, but I'll be abroad then. Has anyone on here had to reschedule their assessment centre? I'm nervous because it's so late in the application stage and I don't want my subject to have filled up :frown:

Does anyone know what the success rates for each round are?

Thanks

The success rate at the AC is around 1:6/7. What is your subject?

It's English. Do you know what it is for the application stage? I was quite excited to get through that, but I'm not sure if they usually just give everyone assessment centres. Update: I have rescheduled the centre date.
How did the literacy test go? Yes, I've been placed in London - such a relief! Now I just hope I'm in West London! Trails and tribulations of living in such a big city hah!

No idea what it is for the application stage, but I remember speaking to people at the assessment centre who told me of their friends that were rejected there. I would honestly say the success rate at TF is similar to any other graduate scheme, they just hire a lot more people due to the nature of the scheme.

Where do you want to be placed. English is nearly full for this year so I would be weary if it is somewhere popular like London. Chances are, you'll be placed somewhere quite inconvenient or not in your chosen area. You can check this at http://graduates.teachfirst.org.uk/application-selection/subject-availability.

Hi,

Idk if this is too late but I changed my assessment centre date with little problem! As for success rate I don't think it's overly dependant on subject tbh! As they like to give you ones which your suitable for if its particularly struggling with numbers- or so I've been told... Best of luck!

Hi,

Received an offer to teach science coming September and I'm currently completing the CKA. Anyone else think the questions are quite subjective and worded in weird way or is it just me?

Any tips anyone?
Hi everyone. I'm starting Teach First primary this year and I've seen that we will receive QTS at the end of year one but the PGDE won't be conferred until the end of year two. How does this work? Does this mean you could technically leave TF after year one with your QTS status intact? I fully intend on completing the two years but my eventual aim is to teach abroad and international schools simply require that you have QTS as the NQT year is only for teaching in England. Any thoughts....? Sorry if this has already been asked earlier in the thread!

Hello! As a 2016 primary participant I think I can help!

I am also against what you call the martyrdom culture, and have been striving to make a balance, so what I say is my realistic experience.

The first half term was essentially 24/7 work. I would be in school from 7:30am-6:30pm, and then get home and have to plan lessons and stuff. This depends on your school, but I did not have previous planning to use, so I was planning all my own lessons on a week by week, or even daily, basis for Maths, English, History, Art, RE and Science. I would take Saturday off but work a lot on Sundays.

After half term but before Christmas I got into a slightly better routine, generally being at school from 8am-6pm, and maybe doing 1-2 hours of work in the evening and working on Sundays from 5-10pm.

However, I managed to somewhat break this trend. I spent 3/4 full days during the Christmas vacation planning 5 weeks worth of lessons. This means that now I am at school from 8am-6pm, but I very rarely do anything else outside of school, except my 4-5 hours work on a Sunday to get the week ahead in order.

So, if your school is like mine and you need to plan from scratch, expect very busy workload until you get used to planning quickly (or plan a bunch of lessons during the summer to help ease you in). I would say that most teachers at my school work 8-5:30 each day, and occasionally take work home at the weekend/after school- but not on a frequent basis.

Hi Scolsa! For some reason I'm only seeing this now. Thanks so much for the reply. From what you said it looks like some sort of balance is achievable eventually! That eases my concerns a little and it's nice to read a balanced view on things as opposed to some of the doom and gloom you read elsewhere.
Thanks again and sorry for late reply.

Thanks so much for the reply.
(Sorry to be a dick, but *wary. Even though I am weary of the whole grad scheme process.) 😂

I am applying for London, so I know the odds aren't in my favour! We shall see, I suppose.

No problem! Do expect peaks and troughs though! For example the second week back after Easter I have to submit Spring assessments and prepare for parents evening- so the workload will be very high, but then after that it will ease up and be gentler.

Not at all, I'm sorry for the late response. They got back to me very quickly and I'm all set for my new date!

I applied for only London and I got it, so don't worry!! I only got accepted three weeks ago, so it may still happen for you x

Yeah I guess it's going to be up and down but hopefully worthwhile!

Yeah, not surprised I failed the AC. They did seem to accept far less applicants than they were letting on.
If anyone has any questions regarding the process, AC, etc., let me know, as I somehow passed it all. God forbid.

It's a very tough scheme, don't feel to disheartened. The feedback they give is brilliant, make sure you jot it all down should you want to re-apply. They genuinely tell you everything you would need to do on the day to pass, which is very helpful.

Hey guys,

Just a heads up about the CKA - the turnover is faster than the 6-8 weeks (although I think this depends on your marker) i submitted mine on Monday and got it back already (with amendment to make :frown:) - so just over a week!

Sorry to be nosey, but what subject/school year was your CKA for? I've genuinely not heard of anyone's CKA being rejected. Also, what did they ask for you to amend? I only ask as I have friends who are far from subject specialists in the subject given to them by TF but were able to pass the CKA first time.
