I am hoping to do a masters at Sheffield next year and to save money I was going to commute from my home in Manchester to Sheffield. Has anyone had any experience with this and could tell me what it's like. Would this be doable with me studying for a master in neuroscience?

    Thanks.

I'm hoping to commute from Leeds to Sheffield and I've just calculated the costs on public transport.

Yearly Sheffield bus and tram ticket - £120
12mo season train ticket (1/3 off with student railcard) - £1744
    16-25 railcard - £30 per year

So that's roughly £2000 a year. Luckily I don't live too far from a train station so that helps.

I've seen it done, one guy did it for a year then stopped and moved to Sheffield because it's a rather long commute and it means you can't integrate as well with the university, another was a PhD student who coped a lot better but was only in Sheffield a couple of days per week and drove himself down.
