I'm currently in year 12 and wish to study Biological sciences at York University.

Do you think it's worth emailing the admissions officer and asking if he has a recommended reading list that would be beneficial to the course, so I could read a couple before applying?

Definitely worth it, especially as you can mention those books on your personal statement. Don't be afraid to ask, it's all within their job description!

Assuming there's not one on their website, sure. There's definitely no harm in asking. If they don't (or even if they do), you can find good reading lists from other universities too. Oxford and Cambridge both normally have reading lists available for most of their subjects.

Thank you. Would something along the line's of this be ok:

Dear Sir/Madam, I am currently a year 12 student wishing to apply for Biology at York University for entrance in 2017. I am writing to enquire whether you have a recommended reading list that I would be able to obtain, as I would love to continue reading around the subject, and feel that it would be more beneficial to read the books that are more relevant to the course I am interested in.
