I am in year 12 currently and plan to apply for deferred entry in October.

I want to take a gap year and travel to a country like Thailand or South Africa and gain experience with exotic animals, as well as getting varied work experience when I get back. Has anyone taken a gap year with any companies or can recommend a company go go with? Also if you've experienced this what was it like?

I've been to shamwari game reserve in South Africa, they also do a pre-vet experience which is brilliant, which helps prepare for vet school and you get to do some really great hands on work. Shamwari is amazing and you get to do loads of stuff while you're out there.

Otherwise you can also do some animal volunteering with freewalker which is an amazing company run buy a South African guy, I spent 2 months with them and I worked with penguins, on a game reserve, and he also got me some experience within a South African vets.
    His website is www.freewalker.co.za
I also spent my weekends with freewalker travelling, we did a skydive, bungee jump, and they do loads more, trips to Cape Town, Jeffrey's bay for surfing etc so there's loads to do.

Thank you for your reply, I'll have a look at that! Did you defer your entry or did you apply after your gap year?

I did mine in a bit of a strange way haha! I applied as a graduate student, as I didn't get in first time round so I went the long way in, so whenever i went out to South Africa I went during my summer holidays and did a load of work experience out there, and if you work at a vets out there you can count it on work experience forms (the volunteering unfortunately you can't but it actually gives you amazing things to speak about at interview).
Deferring is a difficult one as its totally personal choice. Personally I wouldn't defer, I would have my gap year, and then apply as you can talk about your gap year at interview, and gives you time to grow as a person and become much more confident, but you may be super confident anyway so that may not be something you're looking to do. It's completely up to you, but that would be what I would do
