Foundation course away from home?

Hello people.
I'm at 6th form and at the point where i need to decide where to do my foundation. I'm from Cambridge and ideally i'd like to end up at a London college, but for my foundation i'm not totally sure... Theres one place to do it in Cambridge (Cambridge Regional College) and from what i've heard it's not great. This made me wonder about going to London to do it, but i was wondering how costly it actually is(my parents certianly wouldn't give that much towards accomodation ect), . Also i'm told it's just nicer to be at home while doing it. Any help?

i live in the north east and im going to london for my foundation at byam shaw UAL. my 6th form college do a foundation, and although they do have a 100% rate, there are barely any facilities, the studio is packed and noisy as it is shared with a level students. also, all the teachers already know me and like me, so i felt i wouldnt be pushed and i wanted more of a challenge. also if i change my mind about being in london, i can make a good choice at degree level, rather than trying to transfer for the second year of a degree course.
financially, yes it is hard. my accomodation alon is £5,500 in halls as i was given a 51 week contract which i didn't want. then theres living expenses, transport etc on top of that. my parents said they'll pay for accomodation but i am having to pay living expenses for myself. remember also that a foundation course is classed as 'further education' not higher education, so no grants or loans, but if u get ema you can still get it for this year. most foundation courses are free for under 19s which is very good, so u'd only have to pay for materials to.
I do think it is a lot to pay, but i believe that a foundation course in london will prepare your portfolio for degree interviews much better, and the teachers at ual have an idea of what you need to get to a degree at ual which is helpful, i don't know if ur considering doing your foundation at ual, but there are plenty more places in london that offer one.
hope this has helped a bit! best thing to do is write a list of pros and cons and see which wins :P xx

cheers for that info - very helpful. i'm in a similar situation in that i really don't want to do it here and London just seems to make much more sense, especially as i want to do my degree there. 5,500 though... wow. more than i thought lol.

i live in derbyshire and i opted to do my foundation at DMU in leicester... the reason for this being, the facilities are second to none and very professional and because it is an art based university you have so many workshops and specialisms to choose from... being in leicester has been fab in the sense that you pick up on so many different cultures and this can sometimes be a great influence in your work.
it really opens your eyes to loads of new techniques and youre never bored as theres always something new to do, its very fast paced. they really do get your creative juices flowing, i found the foundation at DMU to be very inspiring.
you go on approx 10 trips over the year with most being funded by the uni. they also have a specilised art shop on campus that sells materials at cost price, so thats never a worry.

the foundation course at DMU is one of the best in the country and many people have gone on to universities such as central st martins, goldsmiths etc

my accomodation fees were just under 4k (but this was 2 years ago), i was right on campus so there were no traveling exspenses and its incredibly cheap to live with the city centre just 5 minutes away
