My mum left last June and I had already applied for student finance for the my first year so it took both incomes into account.

This year, only taking my dads they are asking for a decree nisi, a signed letter by his solicitor or a council tax bill that shows single person occupancy 25% discount.

My parents are not divorced so a decree is not possible and neither has a solicitor yet as they don't plan on getting divorced soon.

I sent in the council tax bill that shows the 25% discount, but they won't accept it because it's listed as student disregard. But my council dd this and do not write is as single person occupancy on the bill because without the student disregard, I would have to pay council tax for being over 18.

You can't get any 25% discount unless only one person in the household pays council tax, so I think it should be proof but now I don't know what to do.

Ask them what else they would accept. And explain what you've written above.

I had this a few years ago, in fact the exact same situation. Your dad will need to go to the Citizen's Advice bureau where they will be able to draw up a letter for a solicitor or put you in touch with a solicitor who will sign a letter for you stating that your mum and dad are separated. My mum did this and Student Finance accepted that as evidence that my mum and dad are separated. It may cost, but not a lot from what I remember - £10 or £20.
