UCL vs Goldsmiths

Hey everyone.

I've just applied for both UCL and Goldsmiths (anthropology) and am a bit confused about which to choose (well - assuming I get accepted to both - gotto keep optimistic!)

I went to Goldsmiths open day and it seems really nice, wery social and active, which for me is almost as important as the education...
I´ve missed the UCL open days so don´t have any feel of it at all, but am worried that it´s too big and I´d get lost in the crowd... and I'm not sure how social it is.

The only problem with Goldsmiths for me is that it´s just sooo far away from me, but I´m terrified that if I end up in UCL I get bored...

Can anyone help?

Cheers

p.s. - also - does anyone know when they let us know if we get in or not? Applied before the June 30th deadline...

I don't quite understand your situation. Did you apply through UCAS Extra or something? I think most people know if they have been accepted or not at this stage, and, if they conditional offers, are waiting on results. I don't know what the 30th June deadline signifies. Sorry if all this is really obvious, but I've know I idea.

Have you applied for 2008 entry? From what I've heard UCL has a much better reputation and is higher up in the league tables. There is nothing wrong with Goldsmiths and it is a good uni but UCL is generally considerd to be one of the best. I really recommend going on an open day or you could arrange a tour of UCL so you can make up your mind.

not theyve applied as normal before 30th June which is the last day you can apply before you go straight into clearing. In all honesty becuase you are so late unless the course is half empty you will prob get rejected - especially UCL.

Reply 4

Goldsmiths has a specialism in sociology/anthropology and international academics in psychology/consciousness studies. As an example, you may wish to look up prof. Max Velmans.

Reply 5

I wish I had applied for Anthropolgy.

Reply 6

Assuming you get accepted, UCL. UCL all the way. Not Goldsmiths, not in a million years.
UCL.

UCL is a top 25 university in the world. I doubt Goldsmith even breaks the top 300. You do the math.

Reply 8

When did you send your application? If it was before 30th June, you should be in with a chance especially if the courses you applied for are listed in UCAS Extra. That's more likely with Goldsmiths then UCL though.

If you're going to get league table focused the difference in the subject tables isn't that big.
For Anthropology UCL is six places ahead of Goldsmiths in The Times & only 3 in the Guardian. This isn't that stark a contrast.
Aside from that Goldsmiths is ranked above places TSR would almost certainly agree as having a better general reputation(SOAS for instance).

League tables arn't everything.

Who gives a crap? Even with your argument, UCL wins hands down.

The point is that UCL might be rated more highly but the difference is not so pronounced that the OP shouldn't even consider Goldsmiths.

Quite obviously there's other factors also important to them - this is not a decision to be made purely in the abstract.

I seriously doubt Goldsmiths is ranked higher than SOAS in anyone's book. It's a good 20 places higher in the Times rankings at anyrate.
Look, Goldsmiths might be an alright university, but it's not great. Personally I wouldn't rate it as good but then I'd get people like you bitching at me. I'm sorry but no matter how much you wsh otherwise, an average uni like Goldsmiths cannot compete with the likes of UCL. And I'm not saying that because I'm going to UCL, I'm saying that because it's the truth.
Back on topic. UCL is better than Goldsmiths. To go to Goldsmiths over UCL isn't quite career suicide, but it's pretty close. Especially if you want to go into academia.

Surely it would depend on what that person wanted to study? If the OP wanted to do Design or Media, than Goldsmiths would be the obvious choice since UCL does not even offer those courses. Goldsmiths has a very good reputation for Anthropology so I see no reason why someone should not go there just because UCL might do it better.

Anyone who thinks that university choice doesn't affect your future career is blind. All else being equal, do you really think that an employer would really employ an Anthropology graduate from Goldsmiths over one from UCL?
Get a clue.
And there are plenty more institutions more well respected than Goldsmiths that do Media and Design.

Why are you so determined to label Goldsmiths as a sub-standard insitution? Need I remind you that it is a college of the University Of London. Goldsmiths is hardly as bad as somewhere like Thames Valley, East London or London Met. And what are these institutions that are more 'well respected' for Media and Design? I think many of those places rank even lower on the league tables than Goldsmiths does.

I <3 Goldsmiths, it looks a really nice uni, UCL is more prestiegious(perhaps better), but I think you'd be doing well to get into either, they're both good uni.

IT IS. Jesus tap dancing Christ what is with people trying to defend these unis? I'm not saying they're bad, they just aren't good. Deal with it.
And wow, because Goldsmiths is better than a few really crap unis, that must mean it's good! Ever heard a concept called logic?
Unis better at media/design: Warwick, UCL, Leeds, Sheffield, Cardiff (and they're all massively more respected than Goldsmiths)

I am not denying the fact that UCL is a top rated uni. It would be foolish of me to do so. However, I do not agree that Goldsmiths is not a good uni. Could you please explain to me why you don't consider it to me? I genuinely want to know. And what's your stance on some other 'lesser rated' UOL colleges like Queen Mary?

Reply 19

Because it has inferior teaching compared to unis like UCL? Inferior facilities? Worse career prospects?
Oh and by the way, just because it's in the UoL doesn't have ANYTHING to do with the quality of it's degrees.
QMUL is better but not by much.
