Hello! I've recently signed up to UCAS for clearing and have emailed a few universities like London Southbank & UCLAN (examples) to see whether they have spaces on the course I'm applying for.

I have received responses from both asking if I applied to them. I wanted to know if anybody could explain this to me, I have emailed regarding my intention to find a space at their university. The ucas clearing process involves calling up universities to see if they can offer you a place however due to some universities transferring to email only for clearing this can become difficult.

    Is there something I'm missing?

Both have phone numbers to enquire and this is still by FAR the best way to find out about a university and their vacancies.

If a university asks you to apply then be very careful - once you add a clearing choice on track then reversing that decision will take time. Explain clearly to them that you're exploring your options and wont be adding them as a clearing choice on Track yet.

edit: UCLan and London South Bank Clearing London South Bank University could you help the OP? Why are you asking if enquirers have applied?

Thank you PQ, I initially called LSBU however the person on the line advised me to email admissions directly.

Unlike the universities that took calls, they did not ask for a UCAS ID or any questions... I did find this odd.

They might just be a little behind in getting all prepared for Clearing. It's only been the case that clearing has been active in July for this year and last and many universities focus their efforts on the August period and don't really have the staff/resources to be involved this early on.

It doesn't look like their reps on TSR are particularly active so you might not get an answer. You're right though - normal practice is to ask for your UCAS ID (or your qualifications/course preference) and then email an informal offer (or a "sorry but nope") response over the next few days.

Yeah that's what has happened with most universities, I'll probably forgo any uni options that are having administrative difficulties.

I know from experience that the administrative side is a key factor in figuring out whether complaints, issues or changes are handled effectively or not, as in the past my college course work has been graded late and in some cases not received feedback at all and the processes I had to go through to address those issues were troublesome.
