I applied to UCAS for 2016 entry and have decided to take a gap year so my entry has been deferred. I haven't finished my application however as i need to finish my personal statement so it still hasn't been sent off and I'm pretty sure my deadline is at the end of August. However, I've been told that I need to contact universities directly and am a little confused as to why. Is there a possibility of applying for 2017 entry instead? I don't really understand what I am meant to do and it's starting to worry me.

If you haven't sent your application yet then you haven't applied yet. As such, you're applying after June 30th and your application will just be sent for Clearing. Clearing is where unis advertise vacancies for 2016 so you can try to find a vacancy for 2017 but it will be hard - unis won't want to be thinking about that.

Your best option is to wait until September and apply then. You'll need to create a new UCAS account and start again. But you'll have a wider choice of unis and courses if you do this, and will be more likely to end up somewhere you want.
