Help!!! Conflict between relations & study

I'll be a university student this sept. Well, people always tell me that students are completely free at uni, but I do want to get good grades on my mjors, which means I'll devote more time to my study than others. While on the same time, my friend warn me that if I always refuse to go out with others or other activities including playing cards at dorms or going out for movies or shoppings, I'll be isolated. That's really a contradiction! All those, for me, boring activites throw me into a dilemma between my study and the relationship with my classmates. What should I do? Shall I join them regardless of my study? But that's not what I want. And will this kind of refusals make me break down or have shallow relation with my friends? I just cant handle this problem now and need your help!:frown:  :s-smilie:

you need to learn to balance the two. it will come with time. do as much studying as you need to but dont go overboard and make sure you assign so much time a week to socialising

Then what about activities held by friends in the dorm?
For example, if on one Saturday, I wanna go to the library or have my own time to study, while my friends in my dorm decide to play cards together. Or the next weekend or even one evening in a week, they wanna do other things unrelated to study, what should I do then? I've been give some similar refusals this summer vacation to my former friends in high school and they just seem never want to invite me to do anything. I'm just afraid that similar thing would happen in uni when I want to make more friends. So, what should I choose when I'm in the cincumstances above? Thanks.

meh, I was all over the place with my work/play balance at the start of uni, I assume most people are, but I sorted it out at the end. Just experiment! Maybe at the very start get completely absorbed in your social life then when your new friends know you a little better you can back out of stuff if you need time to work.

Does the first year of your course actually count towards your final degree? In most unis it doesn't; all you have to do is pass.

Just take it as it comes, it isnt always a case of you'll want to study while they go out. Take some downtime to.

I found a mix of studying and going out (freshers week, doesnt count :P), its always the case with everyone that they will want to study or do classwork at some point.

So you mean the first year I just need to get through the basic subjects, such as maths or other basic subjects like that? hmm... Thanks for your mature advice. I'll just try then. Let them know me a little better. Thanks!^_^
