During WWII, Japanese science students were discouraged from being Kamikaze pilots while arts students were encourage to do so because it was thought arts students were more expendable than their science counterparts.

I'd heard of this, but it's also true that all Japanese were taught that it was culturally more acceptable to die than be captured, so the expectation was probably about the same.
