    Hey,

So, I'm applying for a masters at UEL's Docklands campus and am researching somewhere affordable and convenient to live. I'd preferably like somewhere within walking distance but am considering places further away if they have good bus/rail connections.

It seems like the area around the Dockland's campus doesn't have much going on, so I was looking at maybe East Ham, Stratford or Forest Gate. It doesn't need to be a hipster or student area. I grew up on a council estate in Nottingham and have lived pretty rough places in other cities of the UK, so I don't mind that but the safer the better of course.
Mainly I want somewhere cheap that has a high street (pubs, cafes, takeaways etc) within walking distance as well as good transport links to other parts of London.
Anyone with experience in these places or with other suggestions of good areas to live in outer East London, let me know what you think. Thanks
