LOL...^^

How big is a shared room? Does it look exactly the same as the pic they showed on website?

Are there cooking facilities/utensils?

Thanks!

GerardT: Roughly 24 miles an hour, or 11 meters per second and that would be the European one.

Wai: Different Shared rooms have different sizes, It all depends on which one you get some i felt were cramped but others were fairly large. I think they have the area in square feet on the site, but i don't know them off hand. But in general you get double the space of a single for a double and triple the space for a triple. Sorry i can't be of more help.

and what about the single rooms? also how many students share a loo? I also heard that the food u get in the evenings leaves a lot to be desired..

To be fair the single rooms, arn't very big, some more so than others. In a single you'll get a bed, Wardrobe, Desk, Chair and a sink. And usually enough floorspace for someone to sleep on the floor if they so desire.

Expect around 2-3 people per shower and toilet, but it depends on where you live.

At first youll find the food surprisingly good, i know i did, but by the end of the year you'll be longing for something else. Everyday theres a meat option, a fish option, and a veg option. So there's a lot of variety every day and some things are very good. On saturdays, we forgoe a dinner and get a brunch instead which is general very good, cos you get the usuals, plus danish pastries, pancakes, omlettes etc.

anything else??

are you staying at passfield for the next academic year?

Opps forgot to answer one question, there are cooking facilities. There's one kitchen per floor in the main building, in the annexes (which hold less people per floor (ALOT less) it'll be one kitchen per 2-3 floors. There will be no oven, just a stove with four elements, a microwave, two fridges, one with a small freezer compartment, a sink, a toaster and a kettle. You'll have to buy/bring your own utensils.

LSE is a 20 minute casual walk, and a 10 minutes quick walk. Nearest train station (Euston) 5 minutes, Nearest and largest supermarket is waitrose about 5 minutes away. Nearest bar 0 minutes away because we have one in the hall arguably one of the best as its open everyday unlike others *cough* High Holborn *cough*.

Another quick note about the food, on fridays, it usually fish and chips, or burgers (fast food type stuff) and Sundays is your typical sunday roast (its an english thing). You also get a choice of a hot pudding (apple pie or hot cakes) with custard (or chocolate sauce on a good day) or a cold dessert (cakes, trifles etc).

And yes, i enjoyed my first year there so much i decided to stay another year.

Oh they have allocated a room for you at Passfield for the next academic year? So you're one of those who are very very lucky..

I heard Passfield is a particular sociable hall because of the communal eating and living. Consequently, its very easy to make friends. Is that correct?

You heard correctly an extremely sociable hall.

Hi, may i knw something different? Erm.. don't worry it is not out of the range like the first one above.. Hehe.. May I know more about Sidney Webb house instead?

I will be first year undergrads in sept07 and I heard that it is difficult to make friends in Sidney Webb since it there is a huge number of postgrads ppl and well, all the rooms are sinlge en-suite which make it sounds like you will see nothing while walking on the corridor except the locked doors!!

And what about the walking distance from sidney webb to LSE? Apparently it is the furthest away from LSE in all the LSE Residences..Though i can take bus, i doubt its frequency and whether it will reach within 20minutes as promised, and also not forgetting the fact of traffic congestion problem in London.

SO generally is Sidney Webb considered as a nice hall despite the distance? I have been placed in this house, although it is not one of my choices at all! Should I just look for private housing within the decent walking distance to LSE??? It is just so difficult to look for people to swap room, especially you are holding a room in Sidney Webb!

Please advice me!!

Thanks!

Before i answer this question, let me point out that i have only stayed in this hall 3 nights now, and in the summer holidays. So i have no idea what it is really like during the year, and can only comment on the physical aspects accurately but can speculate on the social.

The hall is divided onto blocks, and then again into flats of 6-8 people. They share a reasonably large kitchen. I assume that you will get to know your flat mates pretty well, but the way the hall is set up it is a hinderence to know other people. Maybe if the bar is quite popular then that could be a good place to meet people, which i suspect it could be in the first few days. Im not sure but i might expect for you to be allocated to a flat of mostly, if not all, 1st years too, which would be good socially.

You are right in that it is one of the furthest halls away from the LSE, so far in fact they suggest you use public transport (bus rather than tube). I woudn't know the exact route or details concerning it as i have not taken it, but i don't think walking really is desirable.

The hall is ok, but i've been spoilt by the newness of Passfield! Facilities are good. Location i think leaves a lot to be desired, it is definitely not as good as Passfield, by location i mean proximity to LSE, london sites (eg leicester square, soho, etc), general aesthetics and relative safety. Last i looked at the rent for Sydney Webb, it was fairly decent though.

My advice is not to bother with looking for private accomodation, and stick with Sydney Webb. You could see if you can swap with a postgrad in another hall (Post grads seem to have a greater liking for Sydney Webb). From first years i have met who live in Sydney Webb, ive heard good things but not great, although i would really recommend you get another opinion on this.

Anyway, i hope this helps (probably not).

Hi Nero.

Thanks for you explanation. it does help a lot(Don't worry!)

Actually everything is fine for me in Sidney Webb regardless the how-sociable-or-not-sociable status it is, except the distance which is my one and only big main CONCERN!!

hmm....

What kind of activities does Passfield organise?
Reply 18
gosh, nero.. already recruiting your new posse for the next partying year.

I can help with this - Walking from Sidney Webb isn't great but there are three direct bus routes that take about the same length of time as walking to school (35mins or so). The walk is reasonably ok if you're willing to walk for 35-40mins but isn't the easiest of routes.

Definitely take the bus at night around Sidney Webb and avoid walking under the road. But don't worry, they'll give you a big booklet full of all this info at the beginning of the year and a handy map thing to stick to your wall to show where to go to get the buses and so on.

Re: Passfield activities - Passfield has all sorts of official and unofficial activities. There's a foosball table in the bar as well as a quiz machine and jukebox. There's board games and a fair few games of poker happen. On the official activities front, the committee organise all sorts of bits and pieces. There'll be a few orientation to London and LSE events, wanderings around the city, to begin with. The major events of the first term will be the Halloween Party and the Christmas Party. Fantastically well-worth attending (although I could be biased as I'm on the committee, or was as I'm not coming back).

Oh yeah - there's also a Passfield football team who play in an inter-hall league (confirm that one for me nero?)

If there's an activity (official or unofficial) that isn't happening and you want it, then let a committee member know or come to a committee meeting and we'll (or they'll) see what can be done.

Passfield is a very socialable hall and the activities reflect that so hopefully you'll have a great time.

P.S joy - he's already working on our replacements, how rude :P
