If I had a bit of alcohol before a social event (because it's currently the only way I can relax enough to socialise) is that alcohol abuse?
What if I took 1 shot of vodka before meeting my boyfriend's friends, or his parents, or when meeting new people at uni. Is there something wrong with me for feeling the need to do this? :/

I cannot really call that alcohol abuse, however something does make you feel insecure that you need to take a shot to be able to make you feel better. I think the insecurity is something that you should take a closer look at, not because there is something wrong with you but just because it may drag you bring sometimes.

alcohol abuse is relying on it to do every day things, if you are doing it more to loosen up than to calm your nerves then you are good

If it's one shot every once in a while, then no, I wouldn't call it abuse at all.

Depends how often you take it and go out, but in this instance I believe that it is not alcohol abuse.

In small amounts it's not a problem if you use it like that but you don't want to get to the point where you're reliant on it

If you're just doing it now & again for certain situations then no I wouldn't call it abuse.

If you are dependant on alcohol, even if you don't binge, and only consume small amounts at a time you have a problem. It may not be typical alcoholism but it is the kind of thing you should probably seek help with. There are far better ways to manage social anxiety.

I wouldnt call it abuse but that isn't a healthy pattern of use.

Better to go see a doctor and get some proper medication rather than self-medicating with alcohol.

Obviously that pattern of use can escalate and people end up needing a bottle of vodka everyday before they leave the house.

However, it doesn't escalate for most people. I have used alcohol like you describe (although more than a single shot) in the past but I don't do it any more.
