I'd really like to learn how to play the piano but I literally know nothing about it. How do I start ? I haven't even got a piano, should I start with a cheapish key board? Also can anyone recomend any books/videos for self teaching

Hi, I would suggest buying a piano or digital piano first of all, preferably the full size 88 keys ones if you're serious. Then you can either look about on the Internet for some piano lessons (which I'd recommend) or you can learn off youtube - by going through tutorial vids.

For the tutorial videos you can either look at traditional teaching style and sheet music, or you can learn through synthesia which is basically like a guitar hero type app but for a piano (in the sense that you have to press the keys that light up). I did the synthesia and tutorial vids because I didn't wanna spend money on lessons, though I'd say you should know the basics such as: the keys, chords, how to use your fingers properly with the right form (look at some vids regarding them because it is quite important) etc. From doing this I could play around 10+ songs in my first year of learning, bearing in mind that I didn't learn sheet music so if you do that way it's all from memory. If you can be bothered learning sheet music it will make learning piano easier... I think. To see what I mean by synthesia vids, try type a song on YouTube with synthesia at the end and have a look. Also with synthesia it's better to learn a song in sections because you can't follow it like you would guitar hero.
