It's not about him being religious. The issue is more the threat to secularism that he poses. But there are other issues too. In the 2014 elections for example, between July the 2nd and 4th, state TV channel TRT gave 204 minutes coverage to Erdogan and gave less than a total of 3 minutes coverage to both his rivals.

it doesnt matter. he was going win, anyways. AK Party gets almost 50%
people dont vote AK Party because they like it, they vote because they like erdogan.

plus maybe his rivals didnt use TRT, but they used the other channels.

Then there was no need for such biased reporting from the state media station.

We are not talking about a private broadcaster here, but rather a state broadcaster. A state broadcaster should be impartial. A state broadcaster that broadcasts in the favour of the current leader only is merely a propaganda outlet. It's almost farcical to the extent that you would defend an impartial state broadcaster. It is almost comparable to the broadcasting one comes across on the North Korean state broadcaster KCTV. Would you like to make apologetic arguments for KCTV too while you are at it?

okay, ı just checked it and only HDP got 3 minutes. ı know still the other parties didnt have as much time as erdogan. and TRT was punished for that over than 25 times for that during elections.
so there is nothing unfair

I guess the problem with erdogan is that he is a religious man. So the problem is Islam. Right guys?

He has just removed 2700 judges and prosecutors. I would be against this even if he were atheist.

And they've essentially closed the USAF base at Incirlik, being used to launch the attacks on IS. That's going to go down well...

At a crucial time when the Kurds need US air support to liberate Manbij and close the ISIS supply routes with Turkey that Bastard closes the USAF airbase leaving the Kurds without protection.

Great! The bloody Daesh is gonna turn the tables now and win the war!

Well. No. It's just one base. They can stage out of Akrotiri if they need to or use carrier aircraft. Might limit the support they get a touch, but won't really be affect the future.
Seems to be that the results from democracy are being favoured over the principles of democracy

Interested if true.

A jet flying over a city doesn't really indicate much...

And sometimes, then again, it does. :teehee:

Well he's been bombing the Kurds hasn't he? I mean, the US are bombing his friends in IS and he's bombing our friends the Kurds.

Seems only right that they are still in NATO, after all, no confusion.

The second the Americans don't need him, we'll start hearing rumours of another coup or Erdgogan needing to step down for 'family reasons'.

What an idiot. You don't mess around with the US of A' like that.

Well, if this was a CIA operation, they didn't do very well.

The guys on the ground had slightly more effect... as much as I'm pro airpower, it is pretty useless for something like this.

Twas the tanks that did it. Or at least, had best chance of doing it...
Went to bed with a smile yesterday evening, albeit aware of early indicators that the coup may well fail (e.g. encountering a lot of resistance + Erdogan at large and able to speak to people). Woke up this morning and was so pissed to hear how it went, walked around all day grumpy.

Coups are very difficult to pull off if the military force that's running the coup isn't unanimous - if it's a small 'group of colonels' or the like, going against the generals, or even (as it seems in this case) a group of junior officers with one or two senior officers involved, it's hard to prevent orders being issued to other parts of the military to deal with your coup attempt.

It seems like they started proficiently, grabbing control of the media, parliament, government offices and key bridges. It's astonishing though that they let Erdogan land as if nothing was wrong. They should have been ready to go as far as to shoot his plane down - once you are committed to a coup, nothing must hold you back.

This smacks of amateurishness. Perhaps Turkey's officer corps generally is rather poor and this is a symptom.

those traitors were going to be removed in long years but this coup thing made it faster.
A Turkish Minister had said the United States was behind the coup

lol!

Think it more likely they underestimated the public support / lack thereof. It feels like they assumed there'd be a public show of support against Erdogan.

Yes, perhaps. It's also clear that troops who were 'part' of the coup faced the usual ethical crisis that soldiers do in such situations of trying to decide if it's right to fire on one's fellow countrypersons.

A US source has said that Turkey keeps accusing him of stuff and makes a big fuss in public, but have never actually officially asked for an extradition.

And obviously the US aren't extraditing him immediately, just because the Turkish govt. is accusing him of something. They do that all the time without ever producing solid evidence.
