I'm have been doing a summer internship at an accounting firm (post graduate) for the past 6 weeks yet I am no closer to fitting in at work. I have been going sleepless worrying about what impossible scenario is going to crop up the next day the night before. I have mastered the computer system and the firm's internal programs however it still seems I'm still one foot behind everyone else.

In particular this woman, in truth she's an old and grey thing who is more reminiscent of a woodland creature than a Human being, has been making my life hell. She has it out for me of that I am certain. I have been nothing but pleasant and courteous to her yet still she has reason to attempt to belittle me and humiliate me in front of peers. I have reached the point where I would rather sit in silence pondering what the hell I am doing there than go up to her and ask her for help as she is in charge of the interns.

I don't know what to do.

Honestly - I'd just take the blow, get the experience and ignore her. I know it's frustrating and perhaps deflating but there's no point making a scene.

Oh I am not looking to cause a scene. I just want to know why she is hard on me when she is all sunshine with everyone else. I am breaking out because of the stress, I have stopped eating at work because I'm always catching up.

If you'd shared this at the outset, and I'd seen it, then I'd have encouraged you to nip it in the bud by firmly, but fairly, asserting yourself

As it stands, you'll have to gradually transition to a more assertive self and take a deep breath when you need help. We get one life..

It could be anything. From how your greeted her on your first day, to how your left eyebrow looks. Some people are just not pleasant, for whatever reasons they have or don't have... I wouldn't let her get to you. If you're working hard and you know you're doing as good of a job as anyone else then be content with that and carry on.

Be confident in yourself and your abilities. This woman sounds like she would take satisfaction in seeing your annoyance. So don't let her see it, be the better person and be pleasant as you would to anyone else, and when she is out of sight, forget about her existence.

Easier said than done I know, but you don't have to deal with her forever. Whatever you do, please don't let it affect your work. I speak from personal experience, I have let people discourage and push me away from what I am love, and I am only now taking control of my life again and going back to do what I want to do, because I know I CAN.

People like her are a great test of patience and tolerance, and believe me if you can ignore her and push on your have gained more than just accounting experience in that internship and you will be a much stronger person for it. :top:
