My teacher said that h applied to do maths at Bristol for an AAA offer and he only got AAB and he said that he asked the Uni if he took a gap year and came back next year would they accept him and the uni said yes they would.

    How does this work?

They may have given him a contextual offer or decided as he could have been a near miss that they still wanted him.

    What's this?
For example (its different with each university) they might give someone a lower offer if they went to a school in a deprived area, or had low a level results or a low amount of students ending up in university. Bristol explains it here http://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/apply/
