So its been a few weeks since I started my new job (summer work) - my job contract end date is the second week of September. But, I am planning to move back to university area for the 1st September so I will need to quit my job roughy 10 days earlier than the contracted end date.
Do you think this is ok to do?
How much notice should I give?
How would you go about speaking to the manager?

Your contract will say how much notice you need to give. If not I'd speak to the manager informally maybe mid-August or so and go from there.

See how much notice period you have. Based on that notify your manager a week/a month before. I'm sure if you explain they'll be understanding
