15 years old, Saudi Arabia declared Pokemon un-Islamic. Today, the country's top clerical body has renewed that edict, Saudi media said on Wednesday. The General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Religious Scholars proclaimed it had revived a 2001 decree against Pokemon in response to queries from believers. The Council argued that the mutations of the creatures in the game, who are given specific powers, amounted to blasphemy by promoting the theory of natural evolution. "It is shocking that the word 'evolution' has been much on the tongues of children," the fatwa read.

It also said the game contained other elements prohibited by Islamic law, including "polytheism against God by multiplying the number of deities, and gambling, which God has forbidden in the Quran and likened to wine and idols". The fatwa added that symbols used in the game promoted Japan's Shinto religion, Christianity, Freemasonry and "global Zionism". Saudi-based Arab News reported on Wednesday that Sheikh Saleh al-Fozan, a member of the kingdom's ultraconservative council of senior clerics, says the current version of the Pokemon game is the same as the old one, and is therefore forbidden.

Overall, the fatwa accused Pokemon of promotes polytheism, gambling, atheism and spreads irreligious photos and vice. The authority described Pokemon as 'haram', in all its form selling, purchasing or generating money from it. It also called on Muslims to prevent their children from playing it, reported local Arabic daily Akhbar24. The Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) meanwhile, had also issued a statement warning against the digital applications which have GPS features.

Since the fatwa, three Saudi men have been arrested while playing Pokemon Go at an airport in the kingdom, the Saudi online newspaper Almowaten reports. The three, in their mid-20s, were referred to investigations for using their smartphone cameras to illegally take pictures in the restricted area of the King Abdullah airport in south-western Saudi Arabia, the paper said. It was not clear when the incident occurred or what penalty could apply to them. The game is not officially available in Saudi Arabia, but many in the country are believed to have found ways to download the app.

This is not Islamically inspired. Don't make that assumption: these are not true Moslems.

They are intolerant of cultural enrichment.

Says the person who cannot spell "dude".

Read a reputable dictionary. Moslem has been a English spelling of the word for longer than Muslim.

No. That is misleading. True Moslems are nice, and don't stop people enjoying themselves.

In any event, the Koran forbids making interpretations of Allah's word. Allah said nothing about Pokemons.

Right now shadowy sleeper cells of Pokemon players are engaging in clandestine acts of sedition to slowly chip away at the legitimacy of the Saudi state by chasing Jigglypuffs.
