    We're getting it too: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=79169

Think that pretty much confirms they admit it was overpriced, I thought price cuts after 3 months would be a thing of the past by now :p:

This is a stupid if you ask me as you can put any size HD in the PS3 your self.

Ah but a lot of people are stupid and will be caught by the marketing. "For only $100 more you can get 20GB more hard disk space!" and some people think higher price means they're getting more/better quality. They'll fail to realise that for $100 they could purchase a much bigger hard drive than 80GB and still have the 60GB one from the cheaper model to use for backups or whatever.

many of which got a free copy of Casino Royale (not that big a deal but something at least). Also a lot of early UK adopters are within the HOME beta so they're glad they went for it.

As I said it was clear a price cut would come eventually. Many shop are, and have been, selling it below RRP for months now. Play have it at £400 with Click and HDMI cable.

Anywhoo we don't actually know how much they'll drop it by, i can't see it being £100. Probably down to £349.99

Doesn't matter, it has been at this price in Europe for 3 months, that is the point. The fact we got an inferior product months late at an inflated price tag is why they are forced to lower the price now in the face of satrong 360 sales and amazing wii sales - there weren't enough useful idiots happy to waste their money.

I'm sure every PS3 owner knew the price would drop at some point. PS3 owners should be happy at the announcement. More PS3s sold means higher chance of it catching X360 and competing in this console generation. It also means more games will be produced for it.

I don't think so. Unless it has other modifications done to it, I see it as completely pointless, especially so soon after launch. Like longtrousers said, you can change the hard drive yourself. An 80GB hard drive can be acquired for less than ₤50.

    EDIT:

More PS3s sold means higher chance of it catching X360 and competing in this console generation. It also means more games will be produced for it.
Haha, we all know why the X360 'sold' so many copies...

They're also using cheaper casing, smaller chips and obviously as you said emulation instead of the PS2 processor, in full production so economies of scale and they have fixed the blue diode problem. Which means production costs are much cheaper.

You seem angry that it'll be cheaper, why?

I doubt that the 80 gig version will be released in the EU in the 1st place so if you live in europe it is not going to matter. It would only be a "kick in the nut" if the rumor is true that it will get the SIXAXIS rumble controller instead of the normal SIXAXIS.

It's likely, but they would put it in all models not just the 80GB. Either way people knew what they were getting

I'm not angry, I just hate the idea of Sony trumpeting a price cut as a PR victory when it should have been cheaper in the first place, and also they have been spewing press releases and interviews for months about how its worth so much more - not to mention the barefaced lie they weren't planning a price cut - a lie they maintained about a day before these announcements

The 80gb thing is a really odd move, unless they're phasing out the 60gb in the UK.

With the 360, the 20gb gap made a big difference - HDD or no HDD.

But with this, is the difference between the 60gb SKU and the 80gb SKU important? THAT could be more confusing to consumers than MS's strategy of a genuinely budget console and the premium console

The PS3 is very expensive true, but how can you say it should have been cheaper when in actual fact to manufacture one it costs double what we're paying. Blu-Ray player alone costs the price of the PS3.

Sony aren't the first company to 'lie' and they won't be the last
